1884-85: Berlin Conference: 14 European nations divide Africa among themselves.

1887: Explorers Teleki and von Hohnel are the first Europeans to cross the Kikuyu territory.

1888: Foundation of the British East African Company, laying the foundations for British colonialism.

1890: An agreement is signed between British Captain Frederick Lugard and Kikuyu chief Waiyaki, and Fort Bagoretti is built.

1894-1899: Locust invasion, drought, epidemics and famine among the Kikuyu.

1895: Foundation of the East African Protectorate.

1896: Construction begins on the Mombasa-Nairobi-Lake Victoria railway. Francis Hall welcomes three European families among the Kikuyu. Part of the Kikuyu’s land passes into European hands.

1898: Merchant John Boyes arrives in Tuthu and tries his luck selling food to the caravans crossing Kikuyu country and to those building the railway.

1905: British Colonel Meinertzhagen defeats the anti-colonial resistance of the Nandi people by killing their leader Koitalel Arap Samoei. The Kikuyu surrender.

1920: Kenya becomes a colony of the British Empire.
