The mugumo fig tree is deeply intertwined with the spiritual, cultural and historical fabric of the Kikuyu people: it is considered a sacred tree, home to ancestral spirits (mumbi) and a conduit to ancestors (ngoma), a source of blessings and protection obtained through rituals and offerings of prayers or milk, honey and traditional beer.
The mugumo is a meeting place for community events and for resolving conflicts: the spiritual energy of the tree is said to promote fairness and impartiality in resolving disputes and making important decisions.
During the resistance against colonial rule, freedom fighters gathered under its branches, a symbol of resilience, unity against uprooting and defiance of oppression.
Prayer engraved on the walls of the tree
Say peace, peace. May our children be healthy… peace. May our homes be blessed… peace. May our women be fertile, and so be our cattle… peace. May there be no disease or calamity… peace. Peace we implore you, Ngai, peace (Karangi, field notes 2003–2004).
